Job Description

Sympower's mission is to enable the transition to a fully renewable energy system.

With our in-house software platform, we unlock the flexibility of electrical assets and processes: from steel smelting to solar panels, electric vehicles to paper production. When the grid is out of balance, we temporarily adjust the power of machines and processes through our advanced and automated demand response capabilities. Flexibility is a vital component of a fully renewable energy system and by providing non-intrusive software solutions, we allow our customers to enhance the value of their electrical assets. We empower traditional industries to become more sustainable and enable the shift from fossil fuels to renewables.

We are a mission-driven, international team that is based in multiple countries. We are growing fast and have recently been recognised as one of the eleven scale-ups selected for the Techleap Rise programme, featuring tech scale-ups that are contributing to flatten the climate curve.

Our platform

Our platform collects and stores various types and large amounts of data relevant to grid balancing. At Sympower we see these data as the machine oil that keeps business processes running smoothly and efficiently. We want to make these data easily accessible and turn them into useful information, knowledge, and insights, that our colleagues and customers can use to perform better in their work and run their operations. The responsibility for this lies within Sympower's Data Team.

Our Data Team

The Data Team is responsible for all the data related activities within Sympower and is part of the larger Engineering Team, which is responsible for the platform as a whole. It currently consists of a Data Product Owner, Data Scientists, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers from various universities/research institutes. The team supports the Product Team with the development of data products and works closely together with the rest of the Engineering Team in order to ensure proper integration of the data products within the larger platform. The Data Team has been operational for over a year now. We are in the early phases of delivering data products to our colleagues and customers and building the data infrastructure that makes this delivery possible. This makes it an exciting time to join the team and have an impact on the way the team works, both now and in the future.

Your role

You will be part of the Data Team and work on delivering data products to our colleagues and customers, from the initial concept of products to their delivery in production. In addition, you will help to set up the data infrastructure that makes the delivery of these data products possible. For this, you will work together with other members of the Data Team and members of both the Engineering and Product Teams. Your work will involve a combination of techniques and methodologies from the fields of Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Data Science and keeping track of relevant developments within these fields. Daily activities may include but are not limited to, the preparation, analysis, modelling (e.g. using Machine Learning) and visualization of data, and the investigation and implementation of the tooling needed for our platform.

Requirements

You have broad and proven experience in the fields of Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, and Data Science. This includes:

  • experience in data product delivery,
  • the ability to identify problems that are relevant for the business, identify how data can help solve these problems and build data products that solve these problems,
  • the ability to clearly communicate analysis results to the business,
  • the ability to identify and suggest new ways the business can use data,
  • experience in the preparation, analysis, modelling and visualization of data,
  • experience with Machine Learning algorithms, including forecast algorithms, and optimisation algorithms,
  • experience in building data infrastructure, required for product delivery, from the ground up, such as a Data Lake or Data Warehouse,
  • have good coding skills in both Python and SQL, following best software engineering practices,
  • working in a structured and organized way,
  • have a willingness to learn new things,
  • can work independently and as part of a team,
  • have an affinity with working in a fast-paced/growing scale-up company
  • fluent English
