Organization profile

Every year, millions of people around the world go missing as a result of conflict, human rights abuses, disasters, organized crime, irregular migration, and other causes. This is a complex global challenge that can be tackled effectively through cross-cutting programs that address a variety of difficult, interconnected issues.

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is the only international organization tasked exclusively to work on the issue of missing persons. It works with governments and other stakeholders, including families of the missing, to help them develop and maintain successful missing persons processes. To learn more about ICMP click here.

Position Background

The purpose of this position is to support the data and genetic reference collection related to Syrian missing persons in EU countries.

The position is a short term assignment from 1 August to 30 September 2021.

Under the supervision of the Head of Data Coordination Division, the Short-Term Data Coordination Officer main duties and responsibilities will include the following:

  • To support the preparation of reference collection campaigns.
  • To establish and maintain contact with Syrian and local Syrian civil society organizations in The Netherlands to support the data and reference collection campaigns
  • To establish and maintain contact with families of the missing and to support any relevant interview schedules.
  • To provide logistical and general support to the ICMP teams during the data reference campaign.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Degree in Social Sciences, Business Management or related discipline
  • 5 to 7 years of previous experience in a relevant field
  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic; knowledge of Dutch is desirable
  • Experience in organizing and conducting data collection campaigns or similar events.
  • Experience working with vulnerable groups, and prior experience related to the missing persons process
  • Experience in documentation of human rights violations
  • Demonstrable conceptual, analytical, documentation and presentation skills, including report writing
  • Good understanding of the conflict in Syria
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and Power Point;
  • Proven ability to interact positively with colleagues regardless of culture, nationality or gender;
  • Ability to travel at short notice and to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings;
  • Commitment to the underlying objective of helping the authorities and families of the missing to account for missing persons in an impartial and transparent manner.

Benefits


This is a two month position from 1 August to 30 September 2021 at the TOS 5 level on the ICMP Technical and Operational Salary scale. For more details, please see the ICMP website. This position is not eligible for expatriate benefits or a reallocation allowance.
