Job Description

Join our team

Lighthouse Reports is an award-winning nonprofit newsroom that undertakes public interest investigations in partnership with some of the world’s leading media. Our teams work on migration, climate, conflict and corruption serving multiple platforms, crossing borders, languages and formats. We’re not a publisher so we channel all of our energy and resources into collaborations. We lead transnational investigations that blend freedom of information laws and money trails with emerging techniques like open source and data science. Lighthouse is evolving into the most effective adaptor to connect journalistic coalitions and power accountability and change.

About the role

We’re building a team with the investigative power to identify the cracks in our broken food systems from Big Meat tax dodging and hunger profiteers speculating on food price inflation, to local-hero farmers battling monopolies and industrial agriculture.

For many of these investigations the money trails are critical. The financial investigator will play a key role in the preliminary research, design and testing of methodologies and the execution of our cross-border investigations.

The ideal candidate is a money trails specialist with a keen sense for new investigative opportunities and the ability to communicate the findings in a compelling way.

At Lighthouse we want our team to be as representative as possible of the stories and issues that we cover. You'll join a team of six nationalities fluent in ten languages.

We encourage people from communities under-represented in European media to apply. We would be particularly keen to support applicants from the Global South.

Responsibilities

  • Design investigations, identify new investigative avenues and recognise meaningful evidence
  • Coordinate financial and money trail investigations within our food systems team
  • Execute financial and money trail investigations
  • Follow financial and economic developments in food systems and track potential topics for investigations
  • Liaise with Lighthouse’s open source and data journalists to develop reporting methodologies
  • Write memos about complex investigations in a clear, engaging and accessible way
  • Work with Lighthouse’s Impact Editor to track the impact of our work

Requirements

  • Knowledge of food systems and/or environmental issues
  • Strong commitment to and passion for collaborative work. There’s no room for ego on our team
  • Excellent political judgement and understanding of effective messaging on food systems issues
  • Experience working on cross-border projects, including working with teams with different languages, traditions, formats and pace of working
  • Familiarity with collaborative software, including project management tools
  • Diplomatic skills and lots of empathy
  • Ability to juggle multiple complex projects with many moving parts and deadlines, while remaining calm under pressure
  • Strong organisational skills and experience of self-directed work.
  • Additional languages and a strong professional network are a bonus

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Flexible working
